Xavier College has a commitment to care for our natural environment, our common home. In Laudato Si’, an encyclical written by Pope Francis, we are called to hear and respond to the cry of the Earth. We achieve this by integrating sustainability into our everyday decisions and operations, including in curriculum and in the classroom.
Students are invited to care for our common home through the Environment Service program, where they support the operations of a Container Deposit Scheme collection, create upcycled products for sale at the Maytime Fair, participate in off-campus sustainability initiatives and complete regular clean-ups of the school grounds.
The Environment Club meets regularly to discuss environmental issues. Environment Club members led the introduction of the Container Deposit Scheme, plan Laudato Si’ Week, represent Xavier at a range of sustainability events at other schools, attend Jesuit-province student formation programs and planted trees as part of the 10,000 trees for 10 years of Laudato Si’ campaign created by Catholic Religious Australia.
Xavier College has a Sustainability Policy that outlines the College’s intentions to reduce our impact on the natural environment and care for our common home. This covers the areas of ecological justice and sustainability curriculum, energy management, waste management, water management and biodiversity.
