Sport at Xavier College Junior School is an integral part of our students’ development, promoting physical skill, confidence, and character through movement and teamwork.
For our Prep to Year 2 students, the focus is on developing coordination and fundamental movement skills. Through fun, engaging activities, boys learn to run, jump, throw, and catch while building confidence and an early love for physical activity. These early years emphasise participation, exploration, and enjoyment.
In Years 3 and 4, students refine these fundamental skills and begin applying them to small-sided games. They learn how to work with teammates, understand basic tactics, and demonstrate respect and fair play. Weekly Cocurricular Sport provides opportunities for students to experience a variety of sports, fostering curiosity and enthusiasm for active participation.
By Years 5 and 6, boys progress to applying game sense and strategic understanding in more structured gameplay. Competing in the Primary APS competition, they represent Xavier with pride and sportsmanship, learning to communicate effectively, make quick decisions, and give their best effort in every contest.
Our Junior School comes together to celebrate sport through our House system, competing in House Athletics, House Cross Country and a whole school Xavier Athletics Day. Swimming is also an integral part of our sports program, with our Prep – Year 4 students participating in a Learn to Swim program focussing on water familiarisation, stroke technique and water safety, while our Year 5 and 6 students engage in a Swim Safety program focussing on survival and water rescue skills.
Across all stages, the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and giving one’s best effort are central to our mission of fostering human excellence through sport.
