At Xavier College, we are readers! Our 2026 Book Week celebrations went above and beyond across both the Senior School and Junior School campuses, showcasing and strengthening our vibrant culture of reading.
Students and staff enjoyed presentations from acclaimed authors Mark Smith, Karen Comer, Pip Harry, Corinne Fenton and Anna McGregor, as well as illustrator Marc McBride, who inspired audiences with stories, insights and creative expertise.
Across both campuses, Couchella encouraged students to take a break, get comfortable and immerse themselves in a book or spend time writing, providing a valuable reminder of the importance of slowing down and making time for reading.
The much-anticipated Battle of the Books saw Xavier College go head-to-head with Scotch College, MLC, Ruyton, Trinity and Genazzano in a spirited celebration of literary knowledge and teamwork.
Another highlight of the week was the sold-out Annual Literary Dinner, where guest speakers Claire Thomas, Karen Comer and Fiona Hardy shared their experiences, insights and passion for storytelling.
Three dedicated teams buckled down in the Kostka Library from 8am to 8pm to write, edit, format and illustrate an entire 5,000-word book as part of the nationwide Write a Book in a Day challenge, raising funds for The Kids' Cancer Project. Congratulations to all students who participated in this remarkable achievement.
In collaboration with Loreto Mandeville Hall Toorak and King Edward VI School in Stratford-upon-Avon, UK, Xavier College celebrated the launch of Your Voice Illuminate, a publication showcasing inspiring student writing and artwork from across the partner schools.
Year 8 student Alex also celebrated the publication of his own 35,000-word novel, an incredible achievement of which the College is immensely proud. As the recipient of the 2026 Story Award, Alex had the opportunity to work closely with author Karen Comer to develop and produce his manuscript.
The Senior School hosted a range of additional activities, including a Literary Quiz, a staff book swap initiative and a Books to Movies challenge for tutor groups.
At the Junior School, Book Week was equally exciting. Activities included a Literary Quiz, the ever-popular Mystery Reader, which kept everyone guessing throughout the week, a visit from beloved library dog Sonny, and a range of creative, book-themed lunchtime activities.
Of course, one of the hallmark events of the week was the Book Week Costume Parade, where Junior School students and staff outdid themselves with exceptionally creative costumes inspired by their favourite book characters.
A huge thank you goes to our incredible library team for their hard work and dedication in creating such a memorable Book Week. Their efforts continue to inspire students and staff alike and reinforce the message that, at Xavier College, we are readers.
