We were delighted to recently take up an invitation issued by Jesuit Social Services to host an address by Martha Hennessy, granddaughter of Dorothy Day and a lifelong Catholic Worker activist. Xavier College staff and students were joined by guests from De La Salle College Malvern, Genazzano FCJ College and other schools in an afternoon of reflection on the importance of uniting compassion with a commitment to stand in solidarity with the marginalised and vulnerable, no matter the personal cost.
Drawing on both personal experience and a deep commitment to justice, Martha brought Dorothy Day’s legacy to life through stories of the affection and love Dorothy showed in the intimate family settings of her childhood, faith regained, solidarity and service to those on the margins. More than a reflection on history, her message challenged all present to consider how faith calls us to respond to the needs of our world today through both compassion and action.
The conversation continued during an engaging question-and-answer session, where students explored topics ranging from Christo-fascism and the re-emergence of white supremacy in the United States to workers’ rights and economic justice. Martha encouraged students to think critically about the relationship between faith and public life, reminding them that authentic Christianity is always grounded in human dignity, inclusion and care for the vulnerable.
Perhaps most encouraging was Martha’s confidence in young people as agents of positive cultural change. She spoke of the power of conscience, courage and persistence, emphasising that meaningful social transformation often begins with ordinary people choosing to act for the common good.
Martha’s visit was a powerful reminder that the legacy of Dorothy Day remains as relevant as ever. Her witness challenged our community to move beyond admiration of great examples and towards active participation in building a more just, compassionate and peaceful world.
