The Year 11 Mentor Morning Tea was created to provide students with something uniquely valuable: the opportunity to learn from those who have only recently stood in their shoes. Bringing together alumni who graduated just two to three years ago, the event offered authentic and relatable insights into the final years of secondary school and the many pathways that can follow. Through informal conversations around mentor-hosted tables, students were able to hear firsthand experiences of navigating VCE, taking gap years, entering the workforce, commencing tertiary study, pursuing apprenticeships, travelling overseas, participating in exchange programs, and undertaking structured workplace experiences. The diversity of stories reinforced an important message for students, that there is no single pathway to success, and that meaningful opportunities can emerge through many different journeys.
Beyond sharing pathways, alumni provided honest reflections on the realities of life after school. They spoke candidly about the challenges of gaining employment, adjusting to the independence required in tertiary study, and learning to manage time and competing priorities without the structure and support that school naturally provides. Equally important were the lessons they had learned about resilience, adaptability, and making the most of opportunities. Students gained practical advice on how to approach the final years of VCE with purpose, maintain perspective during times of pressure, and develop habits that contribute to long-term success.
At its heart, the Mentor Morning Tea was about connection. It provided Year 11 students with access to role models who could offer guidance grounded in recent experience, while also highlighting the enduring values that continue to shape our alumni community. Graduates spoke of the importance of building meaningful relationships, seeking support when needed, and carrying forward the Jesuit traditions of service, kindness, gratitude, and care for others. These conversations served as a powerful reminder that success is measured not only by academic and career achievements, but also by the character, integrity, and sense of purpose we bring to our communities and the world around us.
Among the advice shared was, "Keep opening doors and taking every opportunity," alongside the reassurance, "Don't give up if you don't get into the course you want." The importance of the Xavier community also featured strongly, with one mentor reminding students to "Value and treasure the friends and relationships you have at Xavier."
The morning highlighted the strength of the Old Xaverian network and the lasting connections that continue to support and inspire the next generation of Xavier students.
