Supporting a Confident Transition to Year 7

June 26, 2026

In the final week of term, Xavier College Year 6 students and families were welcomed into the Kostka Building at the Senior School campus as part of the College’s dedicated transition program for students preparing to enter Year 7 in 2027.

The transition from Junior School to Senior School is an important milestone in a student’s Xavier journey. While many of our Junior School students are already familiar with the Senior School through music functions, sporting opportunities and whole-College events, this visit offered a more focused opportunity to explore the spaces, people and routines that will shape their Year 7 experience.

Parents were invited to tour the Kostka Building one evening with key staff who will play an important role in supporting their son’s transition. This provided families with an opportunity to learn more about the Year 7 and 8 learning environment, ask questions, and gain insight into the structures in place to help students feel known, supported and ready for the next stage of their education.

Year 6 students then visited the Senior School with their Homeroom teachers, accompanied by Director of Connection Kathleen Upfold and Head of Year 7 and 8 Kostka, Michael Aldcroft. The students toured key learning spaces, familiarised themselves with the Kostka Building and began to picture what daily life will look like as Year 7 students.

At Xavier, transition is not treated as a single event, but as a carefully supported process. By creating opportunities for students to become familiar with new environments, build relationships with staff and peers, and gradually develop confidence, the College helps ensure that each student is well prepared for the move into Senior School.

For students who begin their Xavier journey in the Junior School years, this transition is strengthened by the friendships, routines and connections they have already established. These early years provide time to form strong relationships, grow in confidence and develop a deep sense of belonging within the College community, helping students step into Year 7 with greater familiarity and assurance.

The visit to the Kostka Building was an exciting step forward for our Year 6 students as they continue preparing for the opportunities, challenges and friendships that await them in Senior School.
