Senior School

At Xavier College, we believe that education is far more than just the pursuit of academic excellence — it is the formation of the whole person. Rooted in the Jesuit tradition and inspired by the principles of a liberal arts education, our Senior School invites young men to think deeply, act wisely, and serve generously. In a rapidly changing world, these values remain timeless.

A Jesuit education challenges students to seek truth and understanding across disciplines — from the sciences and humanities to the arts and ethics — nurturing minds that are curious, compassionate, and critically aware. Guided by the Ignatian ideals of reflection, discernment, and service, our students are encouraged to see the world not only as it is, but as it could be.

At Xavier, we prepare young men to become global citizens: confident leaders who recognise their responsibility to others and to our shared environment. We aim to shape men of conscience, competence, and compassion — young Australians ready to engage with the complexities of the 21st century with integrity and purpose.
Here, education is not an end in itself, but a call to serve — for the greater good: Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam - “For the Greater Glory of God”.

Curriculum

At Xavier College, our curriculum is guided by the development of the whole person, a commitment to social justice and a global way of thinking, engaging and understanding. A Jesuit education encourages independent thinking, reflection, and discernment.

Our curriculum offers our students the breadth of options to find their passion and to develop their God-given gifts, but also the structure to ensure that they have a strong basis of knowledge to prepare them for any path ahead. This has been the basis of the curriculum since the very beginning of Jesuit education and speaks to what we value most about education and curriculum as a holistic human endeavour.

We encourage our students to think critically, and wherever we can, give students agency over their own learning. We provide a dynamic curriculum with a number of subject options across English, Humanities, Maths, Science, Languages, Digital & Design Technologies the Arts and Religious Education, as well as this we offer extensive Sport, Music, and Performing Arts programs to all students. In all curriculum areas, we follow the Victorian Curriculum, in F-10 and the VCE.

As part of our commitment to ensuring that every student feels known, heard and understood, Learning Diversity covers the individual needs of students at all year levels, focusing on a spectrum of learning, socio-emotional and neurodiversity that also includes gifted and talented programs, enrichment and acceleration. In addition to the formal learning that students access through classroom teachers, we offer a number of supports that allow students to access tutoring help before and after school.

Literacy and numeracy are central to the Years 7 and 8 curriculum and are strengthened through practical, applied learning. These experiences reflect the Action stage of the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm, where students consolidate knowledge by applying it in meaningful and engaging contexts. In Year 7, every student completes a semester of Literacy in Action and Numeracy in Action.

“In Jesuit education, learning leads to action. Teachers provide imaginative and engaging opportunities for pupils to try out new skills, use new knowledge and exercise new ways of expressing themselves, their beliefs, values and questions.”

In Year 8, students select from applied numeracy studies including Statistics, Data Science, Extending Through Problem Solving, Computational Thinking, and Rockets and Energy, as well as their first experience in electives, from choices such as; Astronomy, Media Journalism (Podcasting), Digital Art & Design and Advanced Music Performance.

Students in the Kostka Precinct have access to library facilities and specialist learning spaces, including an art studio, immersive drama space, Design and Technologies workshop, Digital Technologies facilities and a science laboratory.

In Year 9, alongside their core subjects, students undertake Major Studies across the Humanities, Arts and Languages. This breadth supports inclusion, engagement and academic challenge, while allowing students to explore their interests, develop their talents and pursue learning for passion and enrichment.

The Arts develop creative expression, collaboration and problem-solving, while Languages deepen cultural understanding and linguistic knowledge. Major Studies are aligned with the Victorian Curriculum and provide clear pathways into senior studies and VCE.

At Xavier, a Two-Language Stream is available for students. This provides a rigorous and academically challenging pathway for students to study a Modern Language and Latin from Year 8, and to continue both through to VCE. This sustained study develops linguistic precision, cultural understanding and advanced analytical skills, reflecting Xavier’s commitment to academic excellence and intellectual breadth.

Xavier continues to renew its curriculum in response to student interests, emerging technologies and future pathways. Recent Year 9 additions include Literature, Psychology, Mechanical Engineering and Product Design. The Years 7–9 program provides a broad, balanced education that encourages academic growth, and supports the development of the whole person.

Year 10 provides a strong foundation for VCE, with students refining their interests, strengthening essential academic skills and selecting studies that establish clear pathways into Years 11 and 12. Students may begin selected VCE Units 1&2 studies in Year 10, while students in the accelerated Mathematics pathway can undertake Mathematical Methods Units 1&2, preparing them for advanced Mathematics in Years 11 and 12.

In Year 11, eligible students may accelerate into a Units 3 & 4 study, providing academic challenge and the opportunity to complete a scored VCE subject before Year 12. A broad range of acceleration options enables students to pursue advanced study aligned with their strengths, interests and future pathways.

Across Years 11 and 12, students complete the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), with opportunities to include Vocational Education and Training (VET) subjects. Onsite VET offerings include Aviation, Sport, Aquatics and Recreation, and Music and Sound Production, while partnerships with external providers and schools provide access to courses such as Media, Construction and Electrical studies.

VCE pathways and subject offerings reflect Xavier’s commitment to academic excellence and helping every student achieve their full potential. The Head of Curriculum and Assessment, Head of Future Pathways, Tutors and specialist teachers provide personalised guidance on subject selection, tertiary options and future pathways throughout the senior years.

Students benefit from an expert VCE teaching team that includes VCAA curriculum writers, assessors and examination developers. Many teachers also contribute to expert panels and professional learning networks, bringing current curriculum knowledge, assessment expertise and high expectations directly into the classroom.
